"I enjoy not having to travel to the main campus.  Being in a video conference at the Learning Center is just like being in the main classroom"

Learning Center offering three new programs this fall

Area residents interested in college programs in health services fields will have three new opportunities this fall through programs offered at the Learning Center for Rapides Parish.

Certificate programs in pharmacy technician and medical coding, and an associate degree in health information technology will be added to the range of educational opportunities that already exist at the Learning Center.

“This is an example of what can happen through the Learning Center,” said Dr. Marjorie Taylor. “Two of our partner institutions saw the need for these programs in central Louisiana and found this to be the most cost-effective method of meeting those needs.”

The Central Louisiana Technical College will offer the certificate of technical studies in pharmacy technician. The program is provided by the Ferriday-based Shelby M. Jackson campus and will be taught at the Learning Center via video conference. The two classes will connect to one another four days a week. The instructor, who was already on staff for the campus, will teach two days from Ferriday and two days from Alexandria.

The health information technology program and the medical coding specialist certificate will be offered by Southern University’s Shreveport campus.

Kim Madden, chair of the Health Information Technology Department at Southern-Shreveport, said the university is “dedicated to facilitating a quality education to ensure our graduates are prepared to serve as competent and skilled professionals. Through our partnership and collaborative efforts, our ultimate goal is to meet the professional needs of our communities of interest in the Alexandria area.”

Both institutions, as well as Northwestern State University, Louisiana State University Eunice, Bossier Parish Community College, and Upper Iowa University will participate in the Learning Center’s upcoming “Come See the LCRP” session, which is set for 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5. The event will take place at the Learning Center, which is located at 1410 Neel Kearby Blvd. on England Airpark.
